The Design Kids Thumbs Up

Earlier in the year Australia based The Design Kids spent 10 weeks hitchhiking around New Zealand. As they travelled they asked designers to submit place name signs for them to use on the road. The competition was run via instagram, the perfect place to showcase the amazing type that was received.

An exhibition was also held in Auckland at the end of the trip. More info and a sweet video of the whole thing over here!

Mike Perry + Broad City

I love comedies, and Broad City is my new favourite. Each episode is a hilarious delight! Also delightful is the show's opening sequence, a different one each week by designer Mike Perry.

Supremely Good

Hardhat Design's rebrand for Coffee Supreme makes me want some of their delicious coffee, in one of these goodlooking cups.

Coffee Supreme's inhouse design team have applied Hardhat's rebrand to shop materials including packaging, cups and these stools which have a punched out logo silhouette. Pretty clever.

Moonrise & Hische

Wes Anderson's just released trailer for Moonrise Kingdom has been spreading like wildfire on the internets! I'm particularly enamoured with the typography used, which was created by Jessica Hische in what she has described as "a life changing project". Hische is an inspiration to type nerds everywhere, so I would say it's a match made in heaven.

Fresh Face

I've gone and changed things again! I recently redesigned Banana Meet-Cute's header, for the millionth time it seems during our rather short bloggy lifetime. I promise I'll stick with this new look for a while. This is what the header has looked like in the past:

Yeeeeeeuch!

I was after a cleaner design that used a hand drawn font. Here are some of the ideas I was playing around with at various stages of tweaking:

I found some excellent font websites during this process. All free of course! If you're interested in this kinda thing, these are the links here:

And, if you're not interested in this sort of thing, sorry that this has been the most boring post ever!

Mag Love

New mags!! Grafik magazine which is based in London, and Australia's Desktop both focus on graphic design and print media, and they have both relaunched this month. My workplace has a Desktop subscription, and to be honest I was never really that interested in it, but with the brand new redesign it is just so good looking now!

I love the huge images that bleed off the page, and the content seems a lot broader now too. In the words of new Managing Editor Brendan McKnight "Much has changed, both from a design and content perspective, with not just a focus on finished work, but as the tagline says, 'the culture of design'."

I'd never read Grafik magazine, but I had to buy it when I saw the feature on Mike Perry, one of my most loved artist/designers, interviewing and collaborating with his personal 'Graphic Design Hero' James Victoire.

Crafty types

I'm such a sucker for any type-based art, so when I saw these, which are embroidered, of course my mind was blown! And of course I had to share them here with you too!

More of this stunning artwork by Sydney based twins Maricor and Maricar can be found on their website here. They also work in graphic design, illustration and animation so have a look and prepare to have your mind blown too!

Monday monday

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. Mine was spent reading the new Frankie publication, Spaces, and going on an epic bike ride! I've been dying to get my hands on Spaces, and it did not disappoint. And the bike ride was one of the best things I've ever done - definitely deserving of a post all of it's own, which will be coming soon!

Some Spaces highlights - artist/illustrator Rob Ryan and typographer/designer Jessica Hische showing off her awesome 'type' tattoo. So many talented, creative people in here, I can't recommend it enough!

Sneak peeks from the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail. More coming soon!

Lettering of Today

Lettering of Today is a great wee book Mr Meet-Cute picked up a while ago. It's basically pages of different type designs. I'm not sure when this was published, but it seems pretty 'ye olde' to me. Though it's surprising how fresh and modern some of these fonts still seem today. I guess good design never goes out of style!

I think the wood type is my favourite. Not sure what you'd use it for though… it's just so pretty to look at as it is, no need to be spelling anything out!
